Choose Moderation!

One thing I hate about this time of year is all the crap diets and weight loss fads that are spruiked year in year out, often by the same people (ever noticed how they seem to be a bit heavier than the year before??? Hello! any lights coming on here!??)

Goddamit how many times do I have to say it - THEY DON’T WORK!!! What amuses me is that if you asked any REAL health practitioner, doctor, scientist, nutritionist, what-ever, how to keep your weight under control the answer is ALWAYS THE SAME - calorie controlled, healthy food and exercise. Everyone agrees - yet we still are hypnotised by the promise of 'killer abs in twenty minutes'!

When it comes to your nutrition, there are two things you should do. Number one - choose! don't let your nutrition happen around you! DON'T find yourself hungry in a food court where there's only coffee and muffins available. DON'T find yourself at home with no food and a take away fast food menu on the fridge door! YOU choose what you eat - don't let other people and circumstances outside of your control take that choice away from you!

So first, choose! Then - CHOOSE MODERATION.

I have never been a believer of in giving up all of my favourite foods or treats. It’s just not realistic. It would leave me feeling deprived if I did, or guilty if I didn’t – it's a ‘lose–lose’ situation. Yet when it comes to food and alcohol, many of us find it hard to put on the brakes. In fact some of us have even forgotten where the brake is! We have lost the art of applying moderation and self-control. We have gone back to our childhoods! How many times do we find yourself chastising our KIDS for being out of control, only to find OURSELVES losing it when there's bucket of deep fried chicken on the table!

Bad news -  ‘moderation’ is NOT a small rather than a family-sized block of chocolate every day, and is NOT ordering a Diet Coke with hot chips. We mustn't let ourselves lose touch with the experience of enjoying some foods in the way they were designed to be enjoyed: sharing one small piece of cheesecake for a friend’s birthday, or a chocolate treat once a week.

Those clever food manufacturers have carefully removed the nutrients from our food and replaced them with sugar, fat and salt, and then brainwashed us into an all-you-can-eat, king sized everything, buy-one-get-one-free, more, more, more mentality. Sure, you could argue that they should take some the heat for this – after all they’re the ones that profit from our sugary binges.

But ultimately IT COMES DOWN TO US. This food was not designed to be eaten this way, nor were our bodies designed to digest it in such huge volumes. And besides, we don’t do victim, remember? Blaming others for you poor choices belongs to the OLD YOU. Taking responsibility for yourself and making conscious choices that support your health and wellbeing is the NEW YOU.

BE THAT PERSON from this moment forward!
